In classic Regan form…
… I have a random question.
What do you do when you have the house to yourself? I mean, when no one is with you and you’re sure your neighbors won’t hear a thing, what do you do? (Keep your answers G-rated, mmkay? Thanks.
)
I ask that because I know exactly what I do. I sing. Really, really, really loud. It’s the same thing I do in the car on my commute home from work. I have a 30 min drive from my office to my house, so I blast my music as loud as possible and sing my heart out. When growing up, I’d do the same thing in my house when the ‘rents were out.
Now I live in a condo and have a neighbor that can hear me most of the time. (I swear she never leaves. If I stop smelling smoke in the stairwell, I’ll know something bad happened. Her cigarette smoke lingers from under her door THAT far. Thankfully, it doesn’t creep under my door.)
Anyway, I don’t sing at home anymore unless I’m in the back of the house and playing guitar. But even then, I tone it way down.
So, when I went to the cabin and had one night alone on top of the mountain, I sang. Really loudly. My roomies came the next day. They have no idea of the concert they missed. (Well, they do now.)
So… what do you like to do when you’re all alone?
I have another reason for asking this. Mallory, the main character of my WIP, is a ghost haunting a man named Evan. I’m wondering what else he might have been doing when alone at home and unaware that he was being watched. (Again, G-rated ppl!!)
Any ideas?

I dance a lot. I turn up the radio and boogie all over the house. I also read, but that won’t work for Mallory.
Sometimes (this is really embarassing) I talk to myself, but change my voice around. Like, I’ll talk really deep or throw a random accent in there. Weird, I know.

I’m a singer too. I also eat horrible stuff like fried chicken TV dinners and watch bad movies.

The house to myself? I can’t even remember what that’s like since having my son, lol. In the past, I definitely did the singing and dancing thing. I also have been known to stick in a movie I’ve seen a million times and recite all the lines while eating popcorn. That could possibly be an option for your character–just pick a movie most dudes would know the words too (Star Wars seems to be pretty universal among the guys I know–hmm, or maybe I’m just hanging with the dorky guys, lol). Good luck!

Amanda- Hilarious. I can hear your voices now… lol
Kate- Oh, bad movies is good! Ones you wouldn’t be caught dead watching with someone.
Roni- Again, I like the movie idea.
I think I could play with the reciting words, too. Hm… now to think about the copyright issues with movie lines…
Thanks for the comments! Keep ‘em comin’!

Yep I sing too – been singing my whole life! I also dance too, like Amanda ;o) Hmm so this is Evan – well I know my hubs is alone a lot – he plays video games and yells at the screen…
Evan could have a quirk like he tries to play the drums or something? Maybe he hasn’t told anyone about it – he has a secret stash. Or he could be a really good piano player?
Good Luck!!

Hmm! Cool question!!
I’m soo happy when I have the house to myself, I do nothing special (except wake up late happy no one is going to nag about it & then feel perky all day, not doing dishes or anything the like!) I’m actually very productive & do anything I have on the list… (again, for peace factor!!)
I really like the movie idea too, you can even make up a spoof movie, and just show through character’s reactions it’s a really bad movie – eg if it’s 1st person: “I couldn’t believe he was watching this! Conan, my last boyfriend, who was the barbarian and thought chicks wrestling in mud was high culture, adored this movie.” or he could watch a chick flick & cry?? Or something in between (or both?)
Even if I’m not alone at home..
I sometimes watched Grease or What’s Up Doc, or Japanese Drama
I also move from room to kitchen to another room, leaving paper & books & magazines (and sometimes lights on temporarily even though I’m eco!) elsewhere…. So maybe he could eg leave a trail of crocheting or something equally unseemly for a man, eg bad comics read…? (that main character’s young niece likes to read?) Or chocolate wrappers? Or anything that directly juxtaposes what he’s supposed to do by day? (eg if he’s a neat lawyer singing karaoke can be pretty funny!)

She could even think the chocolate wrappers or such were ghost activity, and then surprised discovers the man perching atop a kitchen cabinet trying to find – baking powder to make a cake or a pudding or something?

Ok… this (among other things) has made me realize that my life is totally boring lately! I am in my house ALONE every other weekend…. totally alone and I don’t have ANYTHING fun to write here!! The most I do is talk to the dog… and I don’t even do that very often.
I always sing in the car and in my studio… and sometimes sing loudly, but I do that even if I have people with me! So, I don’t think that counts.
The ONLY thing I can think of is my wardrobe when I’m at home alone and KNOW I’m not going to see anyone. I wear mis-matched things… totally mismatched…. 2 un matching socks, shirts that SO don’t go with the pants. Until I KNOW I’m going out, I just grab whatever is closest (and you know that I sort of DO think about what I’m wearing when I’m out of the house)
but I’m pretty sure that i’m totally boring and need to think of something crazy-fun when I’m home alone from now on!

I’m a singer too! I also listen to music that I’m embarrassed to own.
